With trekking or mountaineering backpacks, however, it is essential, as only a perfect fit will efficiently transfer the weight to the hips. With heavy loads or backpacks featuring an internal carrying system, the centre of the hip wings should ideally rest on the iliac crest and the rear pad on the sacrum.
How do you measure back length?
To determine the back length, use a tape measure to measure the distance between the base of the shoulders or the level of the 7th cervical vertebra (which you can feel protruding where the neck meets the spine) and the upper edge of the iliac crest.
