Mazimizes down loft while minimaizing cold spots
Cold spots easily form
In simple terms, the benefits of our specialized quilting pattern are straightforward construction, reduced seam weight, and improved thermal efficiency. By not forming traditional rectangular boxes or "skipping" stitches we can assemble garments quickly with great attention to detail. Additionally, these unique sewing lines minimize areas of fabric-to-fabric contact that lead to cold spots. Finally, with the use of these open channels, our design promotes maximum down loft while limiting the shift of insulation.
EX Down: World class, high quality down in three grades
1000 Fill Power EX Down
This is our highest quality down, and it provides an extreme warmth-to-weight ratio. The down is carefully selected from waterfowls raised in climates with extreme temperature differences.900 Fill Power EX Down
Super high-quality 900 Fill Power EX Down provides an outstanding warmth-to-weight ratio. The down is sourced from large, mature waterfowl.800 Fill Power EX Down
High-quality 800 Fill Power EX Down provides an excellent warmth-to-weight ratio at a cost-effective price.Heat retention comparison
The quality of down is indicated with a unit called fill power (FP). When measured at a uniform weight, down with a higher fill power is loftier, holding more air and taking up more space (as shown in the photo below). What does that mean?
Simply put, using down with a higher fill power allows us to create lighter, more packable pieces of insulation. As an example, let's say we create two identical jackets with the same level of heat retention, but one is filled with 550 fill power down, and the other is filled with 1000 fill power down. The 1000 fill power down jacket will be lighter and more packable. In general, 550 to 700 fill power is considered to be of good quality. However, EX Down surpasses that with 800 to 1000 fill power.

High quality down with outstanding thermal properties, even with a minimal amount
A comparison of down balls in standard 550FP down and 1000FP down
The amount of down required to make a down jacket with the same thermal performance
Montbell's EX Down is sourced solely from waterfowl farmed in places with harsh winters and significant temperature fluctuations. Compared to standard down, the down balls are considerably larger and more dense. This allows EX Down to capture more 'dead air,' which keeps you warm. Among our EX Down, 1000 Fill Power EX Down has the largest down balls, and is able to keep you warm with a minimal amount of down. Compared to standard 550 Fill Power down, by using 1000 Fill Power EX Down we can make a garment the same warmth with about half the amount of down, making the garment lighter and more compact.
7-denier Ballistic Airlight Nylon
We utilize some of the smallest fibers and thinnest fabrics available to achieve a highly compressible ultra-light garment. This silky 7-denier shell has the feel of cotton, but is durable enough to withstand the rigors of normal use for an insulated inner piece. Weighing in at a spartan 21 grams per square meter this highly wind resistant fabric is one of the lightest used in the outdoor industry!
A range of options to suit various situations and applications
Montbell classifies its lineup using the indicators 'lightweight, midweight and heavyweight, with the "heavier" options providing higher insulation. We recommend selecting a product by considering the balance of various features such as insulation, compactness, wind/water resistance (wind, rain, and snow) based on how you intend to use the garment.
Regarding Wind-Resistant and Water-Resistant Models
These models use waterproof, breathable materials to enhance water-repellent and windproof performance.
To maximize the performance of high-quality down for specific applications, it is also crucial to adopt an appropriate design. By varying the combination of down quantity, down quality, and fabric for each model, we have created a diverse product lineup that caters to a wide range of uses, from midlayers and outerwear for winter activities to everyday wear and even polar expeditions.

Down Sourcing
At Montbell, we source down from both the European and Asian markets to satisfy a variety of characteristics (supply/availability, low cost, consistent quality, humane practices, etc.) and maintain our lofty standards. Every season we seek to balance the superior quality for which we are known and the lowest possible raw materials cost. We change down sourcing companies frequently to insure that our customers have access to superior products at the lowest price possible. In the course of these efforts, Montbell never purchases down from operations that practice "live-plucking" methods. We only utilize down plumes and feathers collected as a by-product of water fowl raised to meet the demands of the food industry.
We will continue to look for sources of down that maximize value to our customers and allow Montbell products to perform at the highest level.
